Meet the intern - Rachael Griffitts

Rachael Griffitts

I am a college student from the United States and had never travelled abroad before. I did not know what to expect from this internship. I am extremely glad that I came because this internship has given me so many different and unique experiences that I will remember for the rest of my life. During my month-long internship, I have expanded my knowledge of different cultures, places, and scientific procedures. I have met amazing people and become friends with everybody. The volunteers all form a very close bond and share the same passion for sea turtles. I was surprised that I was able to learn so much and have so much fun at the same time.

This internship has provided me with the opportunity to collect data for my senior thesis. I was not sure exactly what I wanted to study when I first arrived, but Chanel and Nikos were excellent teachers and gave me all the help they had to offer. I decided to study the social and feeding behaviors of the sea turtles that are present at the harbor in Argostoli, Kefalonia. With the guidance and advice from Chanel and Nikos, I was able to form a hypothesis and data sheets to start my data collection. I had no idea this was going to be such a great experience. I have grown more as a person while I was here and I have learned more here than I could have from any of my college classes. I am happy knowing that I come home with more experience to further my education, an abundance of new experiences and new found friends.
