Direct flights are the quickest way to reach Kefalonia. Every year new direct flights are added and many are not aware of all their options. Some volunteers fly direct to a major city and then fly direct to Kefalonia. Imagine having a little stopover in Italy or Germany before coming to Kefalonia!
Besides welcoming flights from several airports throughout the UK, there are also direct flights to Kefalonia from Paris, Madrid, Düsseldorf, Frankfurt, Munich, Stuttgart, Amsterdam, Oslo, Naples, Venice, Rome, Prague, Ljubljana, Gothenburg-Landvetter, Stockholm-Arlanda, St. Gallen/Altenrhein, Belgrade, Vienna and many more!
Athens (ATH) welcomes direct flights from many cities around the world. If you chose to add a little time for visiting Athens or other destinations in Greece, why not fly through Athens and add a few days to your visit.
Once in Athens, there are two ways to travel to Kefalonia. You can either fly to Kefalonia (EFL) or take the bus. If you chose to fly from Athens to Kefalonia, either Olympic Air/Aegean Airlines, or Sky Express offer daily flights to Kefalonia (EFL). Flight time is approximately 1 hour.
Travelling by bus from Athens to Kefalonia is a great economical option. Your bus ticket includes the cost of the ferry ride from the mainland to the Island of Kefalonia. The cost is approximately 40 euros and the travel time including the ferry is around 7 hours. Read moreIf you fly into the airport in Kefalonia (EFL) on your start date and entered your travel information on your volunteer user account with Wildlife Sense, at least 2 weeks before your start date, your transfer will be arranged to your accommodation at the Wildlife Sense Field Station that you have selected.
Once you arrive at the airport, please collect your bags, and wait at the pre-arranged location. If you do not see someone there holding a sign and/or wearing a blue Wildlife Sense Researcher shirt, please do not be worried. We make several trips on these start dates.

Argostoli Field Station (Sunday Start Dates): After collecting your bags, please wait just outside the airport at the green “A” arrivals sign. The driver will take you from the airport to the Field Station in Argostoli (a 7-minute drive from the airport).
Lixouri Field Station (Tuesday Start Dates): After collecting your bags, please wait just outside the airport at the green “A” arrivals sign. The driver will take you from the airport to the ferry port in Argostoli. Your ferry boarding time will be pre-arranged (it departs every thirty minutes to an hour during the daytime). Once you board the ferry, you’ll find a seat and wait for the crew to come around and give you a ticket. The ferry costs three euros and is around 30 minutes. When you arrive in Lixouri, there will be a Lixouri Team Leader (wearing a blue Researcher top) waiting for you. You will then walk to the Field Station together, taking a tour of the town as you walk (around 500m).
