Wildlife Sense is a research & conservation organization based on the beautiful island of Kefalonia, Greece. Our mission is to protect endangered sea turtles and their natural habitats, offer a unique learning experience to the volunteers who join our efforts, and promote public awareness. To achieve our goals, we operate a science-based research and conservation project on the island, in collaboration with local and national authorities.
The primary goals are to protect sea turtle nests against damage and to monitor their progress throughout incubation to the hatching stage, while also monitoring the sea turtles inhabiting the local areas such as the harbours. Our survey teams walk along the beaches protecting newly laid nests and monitoring those that are currently incubating or hatching. Throughout the season we also monitor the harbours to observe and record information regarding the turtles’ foraging, social behaviours, and injuries or abnormalities.
Learn MoreOur aim is to study the seagrass meadows and sand dunes along south-east Kefalonia. The coastal study areas will be mapped with a drone at regular intervals to locate seagrass meadows and to create both topographic and three-dimensional maps of the dunes, which will help study the ecosystem and track changes over time. Snorkeling teams will survey the nearshore area to collect geotagged photographs of the seagrass meadows, to identify species, the types of meadows, and their current state as well as changes over time.
Learn moreWhether you’re near or far you can always lend a helping hand. From picking up litter to reducing and reusing items every action, big or small, can make a difference!
…I spontaneously applied for 4 weeks of the programme in hope of doing something different. It was all I had hoped for and more. I had never imagined I would be working in sea turtle conservation. The core team are extremely passionate about the programme and each one of them has taught me something new.
For the past 4 years I have volunteered with Wildlife Sense, and it never fails to become my favourite weeks of the year. There’s something about the strong sense of family among the team and the excitement of helping new life into the world that draws you back year after year. The commitment and passion shown by both staff and volunteers is second to none, and leaving here you feel a sense of pride knowing you really helped.
… an entangled turtle from the bridge was wrapped around his neck and front flipper, preventing him from swimming well. We called it in, kept eyes on him while we waited, and helped perform the disentanglement and health check before letting him go. Nothing felt more rewarding than watching him swim away unrestrained. Even though it was just one turtle, or the nests just seem like one nest, it feels like you’re saving the species one step at a time.
I have learnt so much about marine conservation and research which is vital for my course. It has made me fall in love with the ocean even more and exploring the beautiful Greek wildlife. I have also learnt so much about myself, it has been a life experience which I will treasure forever.
An experience I will never forget. Being around such an amazing group of people, all with different backgrounds has been so eye opening for me and makes me realise how big and beautiful the world is. My passion for life has returned and my smile has come back and that I will be forever thankful for.
