Svoronta Field Station

And that concludes the 2025 season for Svoronata. We said goodbye to our final volunteers on Thursday, and it was a sad day!

The volunteers have enjoyed every moment—from snorkelling in the Mediterranean Sea, to measuring beach lengths, and even collecting rubbish to report to NOAA. They truly loved it. The data collected is crucial for the future, as it allows us to identify trends and address potential issues.

Our final intern also collected data on nurdles. These are very small plastic pellets used in the manufacturing of plastic products. However, due to spills from cargo ships, they now pollute our seas and beaches, causing problems for marine life, including sea turtles, fish, and birds. It is shocking to see that even after large-scale clean-ups, and many years later, nurdles are still being found in their hundreds across beaches. So next time you visit a beach, see if you can spot any—and if so, please pick them up and dispose of them properly. You’ll be helping to protect marine life!

Lastly, our final snorkel survey took place on paddleboards. This meant the volunteers could enjoy the sunset, the sea, and even an appearance from a seal. What a way to end their journey.
