Lixouri and Lourdas Field Stations 

In Lixouri, we have finally finished another successful season! Our volunteers and staff have done an incredible job helping over 3,500 hatchlings make their way to sea from nearly 100 nests in total. Looking back, we are so thankful to have had so many enthusiastic volunteers who have helped us continue this important work for another year.

However, there is still lots of work to be done across the rest of the island, with the last group of volunteers helping to patrol the beaches of the Lourdas field station. In addition, they are contributing to important data collection through beach cleans, beach profiles, and bird surveys.

This data is essential throughout the nesting season, helping us establish whether nests are laid in suitable locations and assess the risks they may face during storm season and the later hatchling months.

As we bring another nesting season to a close, we want to thank all our volunteers, staff, and supporters who have made this work possible. Every nest monitored, beach cleaned, and hatchling safely guided to sea contributes to the long-term protection of loggerhead turtles. We look forward to continuing this important work next year!

Argostoli Field Station 

The past two weeks at Argostoli Field Station have been full of steady, positive activity. Over the past week, we’ve had the pleasure of welcoming new volunteers from around the world; we’re truly grateful for all their hard work and enthusiasm throughout each shift. We also want to thank the public for their continued communication and curiosity; your support has helped and continues to help support our rescue efforts across the island.

Over the past fortnight, we carried out a rescue involving a turtle with a severe head injury caused by a boat propeller strike. The turtle received immediate first aid, monitoring and assessment. Following communication with Archelon, “Elle” was approved for transport to the Archelon Rescue Centre in Athens to continue their recovery.

We would once again like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the Archelon Rescue Centre for providing continued specialist care, and to Gold Air Handling for their communication, transportation, and dedicated support throughout this season.

With our hatching season beginning to slow, fewer than 15 nests remain on the Argostoli nesting beaches. We had a particularly exciting inventory of an in-situ nest containing more than 150 eggs, with over 140 hatchlings successfully emerging – a really encouraging result for the season!

As cooler weather arrives on the island, we continue to monitor our beaches as the final nests prepare to hatch. We look forward to seeing what the next few weeks bring!
