The weather here in Kefalonia is getting better by the day, and our volunteers have been very busy with tagging shifts, beach cleaning, and beach profile shifts. They have all thoroughly enjoyed collecting data for the Capture-Mark-Recapture project, especially seeing how much previously measured turtles have grown, and picking names for our newly tagged turtles. Whilst on their days off, some have been sailing around the island, others have been visiting Melissani cave, and some volunteers even rode horses in Sami!

Our beach clean shifts have spent 10.25 hours removing marine debris from our nesting beaches, and 3 hours removing debris washed up around Koutavos Lagoon. This has been super important over the past couple of weeks, as a lot of debris has washed up onto the beaches throughout the winter months. It also enables us to get a head start and clean our beaches before nesting begins to minimise the chance of disrupting a nesting female.

Unfortunately, earlier this week, Makis and his son from the Aquatic Scuba Diving Club Kefalonia, found an injured loggerhead sea turtle, ‘Bloom’ while out on their boat between Kefalonia and Ithaca. This juvenile loggerhead appeared to have ingested a hook and line, so after the necessary first aid was provided, the turtle was sent to the ARCHELON Rescue Center on the mainland, where it is currently receiving treatment.
