Argostoli Field Station

Earlier this week, we welcomed our first group of volunteers of the 2025 season to the Argostoli project. It has been a wonderful week full of successful shifts and fun evening activities, which the volunteers have really enjoyed.

It is currently mating season for the sea turtles here in Kefalonia, so the population in the harbour is currently higher than usual. During this time, we have the opportunity to collect data for our Capture-Mark-Recapture (CMR) project. During these shifts, record new turtles and previously observed turtles. We also collect several measurements to see the growth rates of individual turtles and tag any turtles that aren’t already known to us. So far, we have had 48 turtles out of the water (19 untagged), 47 being loggerhead sea turtles and 1 green sea turtle.

Our evening activities have been a huge hit this week. We started the week off by playing rounders and volleyball, which got very competitive as both teams wanted to win. We hosted a movie night where we watched the first Bridget Jones, and a group also went down to Minies Beach for a sunset swim! Despite the sea being so cold, almost everyone went in for a dip!
